There are several differences when it comes to successful vs. unsuccessful people, however one word sticks out in my mind regarding what makes the real difference ~ ACTION!

I often get ask, “What makes some people more successful than others?” “Why are some people wealthier than others?” “How do the wealthy manage their time different than those that are poor?”

After several years of studying some of the most successful people I know, I discovered the 12 skills that successful people do differently.

1) Goals ~ Successful people create and pursue their goals. Their goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time Based. I recommend a great book on goals by my friend and mentor, Brian Tracy. Get it here:

2) Decisive & Immediate Action ~ Successful people are decisive in all they do. They make precise, articulate decisions when something needs to be done. This rolls right into them taking immediate action when a decision is made. This is the difference between success and the lack thereof. 3) Productive, not Busy ~ Successful people are productive. They get important things done when they need to be done. There is a huge difference in being productive and just being busy. A great read by New York Times Best Selling Author, Stephen Covey:

4) Informed, Logical Decisions ~ Successful people do their research. They contact their successful friends and get references from them. However, they do not allow analyzes, paralyzes to take over. See #2 for a great read.

5) Avoid the Trap of Perfectionism ~ Successful people avoid the trap of being perfect. Things do not have to be perfect; however they do have to be right. Perfectionism holds up productivity. Don’t fall into this trap. Just take action!

6) No Comfort or Fear Zone ~ Successful people step outside their comfort and fear zones. They know the only way to accomplish their goals is by doing the things they fear and by stepping outside their comfortable zone.

7) Keep Things Simple ~ Successful people keep things simple. They don’t over complicate things.

8) Continuous Improvement ~ Successful people focus on making small, continuous improvements each and every day. As long as they are making progress toward their goal(s) they are happy.

9) Measure & Track Progress ~ This one goes with #7, however they measure and track how they’re doing. The best way to see results is to track your progress. You’ve heard the expression, “What you focus on expands” and by tracking and measuring their progress keeps them laser focused on their results.

10) Learn from Failing ~ Successful people maintain a positive outlook on just about everything. Nothing great was ever achieved with a negative attitude. They maintain a positive attitude and they accept failing as part of their success journey. Remember, we learn more from failing then we do from winning.

11) Associate with Successful, Positive People ~ Successful people associate with other successful people. They associate with positive people and stay away from the negative people. You are the accumulation of your five closes friends. Successful people pick their associates wisely.

12) Live a Balanced Life ~ Successful people live a balanced life. They know the difference between work, recreation and family. To be truly successful you must master this balance.
